The Best Paint for a Basement Ceiling

For an exposed basement ceiling, the usual choice is a flat, water-based paint applied with a sprayer, and many pros reach for a dryfall coating. Flat matters more than brand, because any shine will show off the pipes and joists you're trying to hide.

Dryfall doesn't let you skip prep. How far it has to fall before it dries depends on the product, and a basement ceiling is low. Treat the label's distance as the rule, and cover the room anyway.

Which Sheen Should You Use?

Flat is the answer for almost every basement. It absorbs light and hides imperfections. Eggshell can work if you expect to wipe the surface, but anything glossier gives you highlights on every pipe.

Which Color?

  • Black hides the most and gives the strongest "finished" effect.
  • Charcoal looks a bit softer and still hides well.
  • White reflects more light, but shadows and pipes stay visible.

How Much Paint Will You Need?

More than the floor size suggests. An exposed ceiling has far more surface than a flat one, because you're coating the sides of every joist, plus pipes and ducts, and bare wood soaks paint up. Use the coverage on the can as a starting point, then buy extra.

Do You Need Primer?

Follow the label. Stained or very dry wood often takes a stain-blocking primer. Clean, sound wood may not need one with some products. If you're doing it yourself, our guide on how to paint a basement ceiling black covers the rest. Prefer to hand it off? We paint basement ceilings around Columbus.

Common Questions

What is dryfall paint?

Dryfall is a spray paint coating designed so overspray dries in the air and falls as dust that can be swept up, within a distance the manufacturer lists. It's widely used on exposed ceilings.

What sheen is best for a basement ceiling?

Flat. It hides the most and doesn't reflect light off every pipe and joist. Glossier finishes show more of what you're trying to hide.

Can I use regular wall paint on a basement ceiling?

Yes, flat interior paint can work, especially on small areas. The tradeoff is that its overspray stays wet and sticky, so your prep has to be thorough.
